Walk past a modern desk phone and you will notice what is missing: the power brick. Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers electricity through the same cable that carries the network, which is why a phone install can be one cable, no outlet negotiation, no wall-wart graveyard. The trick is standardized, safe, and quietly load-bearing for office continuity planning.
How it works, briefly
Ethernet cable has spare conductor capacity, and PoE uses it (or shares the data pairs) to carry low-voltage DC from the switch to the device. The protocol is polite: the switch probes each port for a valid PoE signature before applying power, negotiates how much the device needs, and delivers only that, so plugging a laptop into a PoE port is harmless. Power classes range from a few watts (a desk phone) up through wireless access points and cameras.
The standards you will see on spec sheets
- 802.3af (PoE): up to ~15 W per port. Plenty for phones; the baseline standard.
- 802.3at (PoE+): up to ~30 W. Covers video phones, access points, most cameras.
- 802.3bt (PoE++/UPoE): up to ~60-90 W. Displays, lighting, exotic gear; overkill for telephony.
- A typical desk phone draws roughly 2 to 6 watts, so phone deployments rarely stress per-port limits; what they stress is the total power budget, below.
Switch vs injector, and the budget trap
Two ways to supply PoE: a PoE-capable switch powering every port, or single-port injectors spliced inline for one device each. Injectors are fine for one or two phones; beyond that they recreate the wall-wart problem in the network closet. The spec to actually read on a PoE switch is the total budget: a "24-port PoE" switch with a 190 W budget can run 24 phones easily (24 x 6 W = 144 W) but not 24 phones plus eight 25 W access points. Budget exhaustion presents as the mystery of devices that boot at night and fail at 9 AM when everything is drawing at once.
The continuity angle most offices miss
Because every phone drinks from the switch, one UPS on the network closet keeps every desk phone, and the network they ride, alive through short outages. That is dramatically cheaper than a battery at each desk and turns a blackout into a non-event for as long as the UPS holds, after which calls follow failover rules to mobile apps anyway. Sizing note: phones are light loads, and a modest UPS carries a phone-plus-switch closet for a surprisingly long time; the same UPS also protects the router that the whole scheme depends on.
Buying guidance in one line: for any office with more than a couple of desk phones, a PoE switch with comfortable budget headroom plus one decent UPS is the cleanest, cheapest resilience upgrade in telephony.
