Connect Your VoIP-6 or VoIP-12 Desk Phone to Wi-Fi

You can do this right on the phone in about five minutes, using its screen and keypad. The steps are the same on the VoIP-6 and the VoIP-12.

Before you start

  • The USB Wi-Fi adapter that came with your phone.
  • Your Wi-Fi network name and password. Passwords are case sensitive.
  • A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. The adapter does not connect to 5 GHz. Most routers broadcast both, often with similar names.
  • The phone's power adapter, if the phone currently gets its power from the network cable and you plan to unplug that cable.

The keys you will use

  • Softkeys: the row of buttons right under the screen. What each one does is shown on the screen just above it, like Scan, OK or Return.
  • Arrow keys: up and down move through a list. Left and right change a setting, like Disabled to Enabled, and move the cursor while you type.
  • OK: the button in the middle of the arrows. It opens or confirms what is selected.
  • Return: goes back one screen.
  • Back to the main screen: press Home on the VoIP-6. On the VoIP-12, press Return until you are out of the menu. On either phone, you can also lift the handset and hang it back up.

How to type letters, numbers and symbols

The phone types like an older cell phone. Press a key more than once to step through its letters. For example, press 2 once for a, twice for b and three times for c. Pause for a second, or press a different key, to move on to the next character.

Switch between numbers, lowercase and capitals with the input mode softkey under the screen. It shows the current mode. Press it to cycle through:

  • 123: numbers only.
  • abc: lowercase letters.
  • ABC: capital letters.
  • 2aB: everything on one key. Pressing 2 steps through 2, a, b, c, A, B, C. This is the easiest mode for passwords that mix numbers, lowercase and capitals.

Symbols are on the 1, * and # keys. Press the key repeatedly until the symbol you want shows up.

Made a mistake? Use the delete softkey to erase the character before the cursor, and the left and right arrows to move the cursor.

If your Wi-Fi password uses a symbol that is not on these keys, like ? or a quote mark, call us at 888-973-0515 and we will help you get connected.

Connect to Wi-Fi, step by step

  1. Plug the Wi-Fi adapter into the USB port on the phone. If a message says the WLAN adapter was added, press OK.
  2. Press Menu, choose Basic, then WLAN and press OK. On some versions this item is called Wi-Fi.
  3. On the WLAN line, press the left or right arrow until it says Enabled.
  4. Press the Scan softkey and wait a few seconds while the phone looks for networks.
  5. Arrow down to Available Network and press OK.
  6. Arrow to your Wi-Fi network and press the Connect softkey. On some versions it says Link.
  7. Type your Wi-Fi password, using the typing tips above, and press OK.
  8. Wait a few seconds. When it is connected, your network shows a check mark and the softkey changes to Unlink. The Wi-Fi icon at the top of the screen shows it is connected.
  9. Go back to the main screen (Home on the VoIP-6, or Return on the VoIP-12) and make a test call.

Once Wi-Fi is connected, the phone uses it first, even if a network cable is still plugged in. The phone remembers the network, so it reconnects on its own after a restart.

If something goes wrong

  • Your network is not in the list: make sure it is a 2.4 GHz network, move the phone closer to the router and press Scan again. Hidden networks that do not broadcast their name are not shown; call us for help with those.
  • Wrong password: check capitals and symbols. Switching to 2aB mode makes mixed passwords easier.
  • No WLAN item in the menu: unplug the adapter, plug it back in firmly, and wait a few seconds.
  • Forget an old network: go to Menu > Basic > WLAN > Known Network, select it and delete it.
  • Connected to Wi-Fi but calls do not work: run our free network tools, or call us at 888-973-0515. Live technicians are available 24/7/365 for anything urgent.

Common questions

Do the VoIP-6 and VoIP-12 have Wi-Fi?

Yes, through the USB Wi-Fi adapter that comes with the phone. Plug it into the phone's USB port, then connect from Menu > Basic > WLAN on the phone.

Why doesn't my Wi-Fi network show up on the phone?

The adapter connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Make sure your router broadcasts a 2.4 GHz network, move the phone closer to the router, then press Scan again.

Can I leave the network cable plugged in?

Yes. When the Wi-Fi adapter is connected, the phone uses Wi-Fi first even with the cable plugged in. If the phone gets its power from the network cable, plug in its power adapter before you unplug the cable.

How do I type capital letters and symbols on the phone?

Press the input mode softkey until it shows ABC for capitals or 2aB for a mix of numbers, lowercase and capitals. Symbols are on the 1, * and # keys: press the key repeatedly until the symbol you want appears.
