Cannon VoIP vs. Comcast Business

A cable bundle vs. a phone company.

Comcast's phone service is built around its internet bundle, and Comcast's own VoiceEdge guides reference Cisco's BroadWorks software. These are included with every Cannon VoIP extension, while Comcast sells them separately or does not list them:

  • Built-in CRM. No CRM or CRM integrations are listed on Comcast's site.
  • Video meetings and team chat. Comcast sells these as Webex or Microsoft Teams seats at $34.95 to $44.95.
  • Call queues and a wallboard. Queues are a Call Queue Agent add-on, and a wallboard is not listed.
  • Business texting. Texting on Business Voice or VoiceEdge is not listed on Comcast's site.
  • Desk phones you own. VoiceEdge phones come from Comcast for a monthly fee and must be returned.

5-user scenario: what you'd actually pay per month

Cannon VoIP
$170/month
5 extensions × $34, all-in. No regulatory fee, no E911 fee, no support-tier fee: unlimited domestic calling and texting, AI call/voicemail transcription, and CRM integration all included, with a main number plus a direct number for every extension (6 numbers) in the price.
Comcast Business
~$200 to $250/month plus taxes and fees
The closest match to what $34 includes is VoiceEdge with Webex Standard seats for video and chat: 5 x $34.95 = $174.75 (Illinois rate card). Add the $11 Voice Network Investment fee and the $14.95 per-account VoiceEdge equipment fee for about $200, and the Call Queue Agent add-on at $9.95 for 5 agents pushes it to about $250. Regulatory recovery, USF and 911 fees come on top. Credit where due: bundled Business Voice lines from line 4 are $29.95, cheaper on the sticker if you only need basic calling and keep Comcast Internet.

Meetings & messaging
Built in: video meetings with a permanent room link and dial-in from any phone, team chat channels and direct messages, and a website chat bubble your staff answer from the portal or the Android and iPhone apps.
Video and team messaging come through Webex seats ($34.95 to $44.95) or Teams seats. VoiceEdge includes audio conferencing for up to 100. A website chat widget is not listed on Comcast's site.

Call Queue Agent add-on and a web receptionist console. Listen/whisper/barge, a wallboard and a power dialer are not listed on Comcast's site.
Call screening & 911
Call screening shows each caller's name and reason word for word as they speak, before you answer, and AI screening rules send calls you never want to voicemail without ringing. A 911 address is registered on each number and checked with 911 systems, each building can be a 911 site, 911 calls from the mobile app send the phone's location, and people you choose are alerted when anyone dials 911.
Call screening and spam blocking are not listed on Comcast's site for Business Voice or VoiceEdge.
Connect your own AI assistant
Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or any Model Context Protocol (MCP) assistant, choose which areas it can reach, and high-risk actions wait for a person to approve them.
No MCP server or public API for Business Voice or VoiceEdge is listed on Comcast's site.
Platform ownership
Our own apps, servers and switching, run from our facility in Fort Worth with two backup regions; customer data is stored only in the US and is never shared or sold; only three outside companies for voice and texting; most feature requests ship in under four weeks.
Owned by Comcast Corporation. Comcast's VoiceEdge guides reference BroadWorks, Cisco's hosted PBX software (formerly BroadSoft). The video and chat layer is Cisco Webex or Microsoft Teams.
Hardware & BYOD
Bring your own desk phone if it's on our compatibility list, or get our VoIP-6 ($198, with 10% off at 25 phones and 15% off at 75) or an ATA adapter ($99). We never rent or lease equipment: phones and adapters are yours to keep, purchased outright. (The one exception is the optional VoIP-HYBRID-1 on-site server for large organizations, a managed appliance we own while our software is on it, with a $1 buyout.)
VoiceEdge phones must come from Comcast for a monthly fee, and bring your own device is not supported. Comcast keeps ownership, unreturned equipment is charged, and replacements run $70 to $890.

Bottom line: Comcast Business makes sense if you want one bill for internet and phone, 24/7 phone support, and only basic lines. VoiceEdge guides reference Cisco's BroadWorks software, with video sold as Webex or Teams seats, while Cannon VoIP builds and runs its own system and includes the CRM, meetings and contact center tools in one month-to-month price.
