Cannon VoIP vs. Grasshopper

Grasshopper is a GoTo-owned virtual phone system: a business number that rings through mobile and desktop apps. It prices per account with unlimited users, so it costs less than Cannon VoIP for small teams. Desk phone support, video meetings, team chat and CRM integrations are not listed on its site.

A virtual number app vs. a full phone system.

Grasshopper is built for forwarding a business number to the phones your team already carries. Cannon VoIP is a full office phone system. These come with every $34 Cannon VoIP extension, and Grasshopper does not list them:

  • Desk phone support. Grasshopper is app based, and desk phone sales or support are not listed on its site.
  • Built-in CRM and 11 CRM integrations. Grasshopper has basic contacts only, and CRM integrations are not listed on its site.
  • Video meetings, team chat and website chat. None of these is listed on Grasshopper's site.
  • Call queues, a wallboard and a power dialer. None of these is listed on Grasshopper's site.
  • An API and MCP for your own AI assistant. A public API and an MCP server are not listed on Grasshopper's site.

5-user scenario: what you'd actually pay per month

Cannon VoIP
$170/month
5 extensions × $34, all-in. No regulatory fee, no E911 fee, no support-tier fee: unlimited domestic calling and texting, AI call/voicemail transcription, and CRM integration all included, with a main number plus a direct number for every extension (6 numbers) in the price.
Grasshopper
~$75 to $92/month plus taxes and fees
Grasshopper's Small Business plan covers the whole account with unlimited users and 4 numbers: $70/month billed monthly (third-party reported) or $55/month billed annually. Two more numbers to match our 6 add $18 to $20, and texting adds $1.50/month plus $19.50 once. That is about $75 to $92/month, before taxes and a Regulatory Recovery Fee. Credit where due: that is cheaper. But it buys app-based calling; desk phones, video, chat and a CRM are not listed at any price.

Grasshopper
Pricing & contract
$34/extension/month flat, all-in: unlimited domestic calling and texting included. No long-term contract: month to month.
Priced per account, not per user. True Solo $14, Solo Plus $25, Small Business $55/month billed annually; about $18, $32 and $70 billed monthly (third-party reported). Solo Plus and Small Business allow unlimited users.
Add-ons & hidden fees
No hidden fees. Core features are included in one flat rate per extension: no regulatory surcharge, no E911 fee, no core-feature upcharges. Optional add-ons are priced up front: AI receptionist $65/month, or free with 10 or more users; Branded Calling + RCS $45 one-time setup, then $40/month per block of 25 extensions; and cloud eFax.
Taxes plus a Regulatory Recovery Fee (amount not published). Texting registration $19.50 one-time and $1.50/month. Extra numbers $9 to $10/month. Extra Solo Plus extensions $3 to $5/month.
Contract lock-in & termination fee
None: month-to-month. Leave anytime with no early termination fee.
Monthly or annual. Under GoTo's terms, payments are non-refundable, plans auto-renew unless you give notice at least 30 days before the term ends, and ending a term early makes the remaining fees due.
What's included
Call transcription and SMS included on every extension, every tier. Queues, auto attendants, voicemail transcription, recording: included.
True Solo is one user and one number, forwarding to a single phone. Call recording, the phone menu, simultaneous call handling and AI call summaries need Solo Plus or Small Business.
Setup & onboarding
We handle every step of onboarding and set your team up for success, then call us anytime during business hours to add, change, or fine-tune any feature, big or small. Businesses within about an hour and a half of DFW Airport get free on-site installation.
Self-serve signup with a 7-day free trial, no credit card. Grasshopper says there are no setup charges.
Customer support & reliability
Standard support Mon–Fri, 9 AM–5 PM; if a system is down or it's urgent, a real person is reachable 24/7, no ticket queue, no support tier to unlock. Live technicians stand by at our Fort Worth office 24/7/365, and businesses within about an hour and a half of DFW Airport can get on-site emergency service (billed separately; contact us for rates).
24/7 support on all plans by phone, email, chat and social. Credit where due: that is around the clock.
Integrations
Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace, plus 11 CRM integrations included: Zoho, HubSpot, Salesforce, Dynamics 365, GoHighLevel, Zendesk, Freshdesk, SugarCRM, Odoo, Housecall Pro, CallRail. Contacts sync every six hours or on demand and name callers in screen pops; finished calls log automatically into HubSpot, Zoho and GoHighLevel.
Third-party CRM or app integrations are not listed on Grasshopper's site.
Built-in CRM
Included: people, deals and pipelines, website forms, automation, email sequences, service desk and appointments with a public booking page.
No built-in CRM; basic contacts management only.
International calling
$0.25/min to common countries, $1.75/min to less-common countries, rare/high-cost destinations quoted separately.
Billed per minute by destination, about 8 to 95 cents per minute. Must be enabled by support, and only for accounts older than 60 days.
Meetings & messaging
Built in: video meetings with a permanent room link and dial-in from any phone, team chat channels and direct messages, and a website chat bubble your staff answer from the portal or the Android and iPhone apps.
Video meetings, team chat and website chat are not listed on Grasshopper's site.
Contact center tools
A wallboard with live queue stats, where supervisors can listen, whisper or barge into live calls, plus a power dialer for outbound campaigns that only calls between 8am and 9pm in the lead's local time.
Call queues, listen/whisper/barge, a wallboard and a power dialer are not listed on Grasshopper's site. Call Blasting (ring all lines at once) is a $9/month add-on.
Call screening & 911
Call screening shows each caller's name and reason word for word as they speak, before you answer, and AI screening rules send calls you never want to voicemail without ringing. A 911 address is registered on each number and checked with 911 systems, each building can be a 911 site, 911 calls from the mobile app send the phone's location, and people you choose are alerted when anyone dials 911.
Incoming call control lets you screen callers, block calls and set schedules on all plans. Name-announce screening and automatic spam blocking are not listed on Grasshopper's site.
Connect your own AI assistant
Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or any Model Context Protocol (MCP) assistant, choose which areas it can reach, and high-risk actions wait for a person to approve them.
A public API and an MCP server for connecting your own AI assistant are not listed on Grasshopper's site.
Platform ownership
Our own apps, servers and switching, run from our facility in Fort Worth with two backup regions; customer data is stored only in the US and is never shared or sold; only three outside companies for voice and texting; most feature requests ship in under four weeks.
Part of GoTo (formerly LogMeIn). Whether it runs on its own stack or GoTo's shared platform is not published.
Hardware & BYOD
Bring your own desk phone if it's on our compatibility list, or get our VoIP-6 ($198, with 10% off at 25 phones and 15% off at 75) or an ATA adapter ($99). We never rent or lease equipment: phones and adapters are yours to keep, purchased outright. (The one exception is the optional VoIP-HYBRID-1 on-site server for large organizations, a managed appliance we own while our software is on it, with a $1 buyout.)
App based: iOS, Android and desktop apps, plus forwarding to any phone. Desk phone sales, rental and support are not listed on Grasshopper's site.

Bottom line: Grasshopper is cheaper for a small team that only needs a business number on their cell phones, and its per-account pricing is a real advantage there. For an office that wants desk phones, queues, meetings, team chat and a CRM, it is a different kind of product, and Cannon VoIP's $34 extension includes all of them.
